Hayden Austin, 13 years old, of Wylie, Texas broke my boat record today. He also broke the Lavon Jr Rod & Reel record by almost 15#. The calculated weight of this blue was 49.745#.
Did I mention that Hayden is one of my grandsons?
We did receive confirmation the other day that Hayden did break the Lavon junior water body record and the catch and release junior record for Lavon.
It's too bad I didn't have someone videoing the fight of this fish. Hayden handled it like a true veteran. He managed to bring the fish through the stumps and get it to the boat only to have it take off again stripping drag. My heart sunk thinking he may not be able to turn the fish again and if not the fish would surely spool us and be gone for good. Just as the reel was getting very low on line Hayden managed to turn the fish again and had him on the way to the boat. When the fish got to boat this time it decided to run around the tree we were tied to a couple of times and I thought this has to be where we lose this fish. I told Hayden to just hold up for a bit and maybe the fish would unwrap it's self. After a bit the fish begin to go wild and would surely break free if something wasn't done soon. Finally I noticed by the swirls of the water the fish was coming close to the surface. I finally took a chance with the dip net at where I thought the head might be and BINGO. Fish was in the net. At that point I cut the line and brought the fish in the boat.
