Cod on increase in lower murray river

the primary industries (Pirsa) have been restocking cod fingerlings in the lower Murray River over the last couple of years and
I have finally noticed a change we were told the cod are treated with a uv dye so that they could monitor survival rates of the young and while I have heard all about it I had not seen anything , until last weekend we were using a shrimp net to catch shrimp for bait and every time you pull the shrimp net up there were masses of small fish in it if you look at them in the sunlight they have a ultraviolet glow and it disappears when they are in shade so I guess they are the uv cod fingerlings. the location where we were fishing there were heaps of them but they were still very small hopefully they survive the perils of being a small fish and manage to grow up as I would love to one day catch one of these amazing fish
cheers guys tight lines

Thanks for the info. Very interesting.

You don't say how far down the river you are. But you will get some good cod around Mulwala. Unless it has changed the season opens on 1st Dec. I haven't fished there for many years. In fact I can tell you it was 2001 -2002 when I fished there last, so 17 years ago...I'm getting old :)

Mulwala is only about 2 hours from my current location...Maybe I might do an over night swag trip. Actually I just looked on Google because Google knows everything. Mulwala is 136km from me, which is close enough for a day trip...
i am talking a lot further south than that we spent a weekend at a place in South Australia called Morgan they don't have a cod season in South Australia i don't think you can even take them out of the water to unhook them. they have been so scarce down south for many years so it was a promising sign to see young cod i have heard that they are stocking some dams and parts of the Murray as they have worked out fishing brings tourists some parts of the coast they have huge numbers of tourists turn up to catch the massive Australian Salmon and Whiting
Apparently there is a "catch and release" season -

Just come over the border and you can catch one for dinner 😊
