Hi Pip,

Happy new year to you too.

I don't know "k rd" so I cannot comment on that.

Cannot really answer your question either...need more info :)

Bream will take soft plastic, although I have never tried.

I like to use hard body, small, floating lures. Very small poppers or very small lures with a large bib. A large bib (compared to the size of the lure) work just like a popper. The trick is to be gentle. Little jerks, just enough to make ripples.

Is the place you are fishing open water? Or are there structures like over hanging trees, a bridge, some moored boats etc?
Hey mate.
It's a river about 1 k in from the bay.. open water bit of a rock wall and shallow. From what I see only fishable on high tide. It's Werribee river down Werribee south..
Oh...I see it is actually called K Road :)

I have never fished the area but it looks OK. I can see lots of good spots worth a try.

How good are your casting skills? If there is a rock wall, try casting so that the lure drops right at the base. Say, 50mm or so out. If not that good, try cast directly against the rock, but not hard. Try to just sort of tap the rock and let the lure drop into the water. The bream will think a cicada or dragonfly has head-butted the rock.

Let the lure sit there. Then give it a gentle jerk using the rod tip but just enough to make some ripples without moving the lure. Wait 10 or 15 seconds and repeat. You are trying to imitate a cicada that has just head-butted a rock :)

Those trees I see are also good spots to try. Even high trees are good. Same theory...insect falling from tree into water...The insect will not panic but rather stay still and try to get back to shore one little bit at a time.
Hey itsaboat.
Thanks for the tips. Went back there this morning not as much on the view and no hook up.
Was only there for few hours. I've been told that there not really on the bite down there.
I'll keep at it. Think of getting a kayak. Ive been looking at a few. Do you know anything about them.
Hi Pip,

I can't give any advice on a kayak...but I know someone that can :)...Mark !

Over to you Mark...

Yes, keep trying. All the tips and advice in the world are good...but the fish have to be there!! I have said many times, on a 4 star day I can cast lures into a bath tub and not catch a thing.

I found a spot near me (finally) on the Murrumbidgee. I got a strike within 30 seconds of my first cast. No hook-up just a strike. I stayed there for the next 3 hours. Why? Because I saw an eagle doing some fishing too. A white cocky came to check out the scene and my kelpie was having a great time. It is called fishing ---- not catching !

If you don't get a strike or hook up in 10 minutes, then move. If there are fish there, they will strike within 10 minutes. If they don't strike then move. It might only be 10 or 15 meters or maybe you have to move km's.

Or maybe you don't need to move at all :)

I know a little bit about catching bream on lures. It is all about imitating a bug. A bit like fly fishing, without a fly!

Keep at it and let us know how you go 😊
