Deep Snapper Fishing

Hey Guys,
I live in the Caribbean island of Antigua. We do a lot of fishing here however i has been quite a task getting to understand the best form of bait for catching snapper between 400ft 600ft deep. Salt water fishing.

I have never fished that deep. I wonder if metal jigs would work. Micro jigs are usually my goto weapon for snapper.
I would probably try a heavy luminescent jig on that depth and bounce it along the bottom or repeatedly wind it up a bit and let it flutter down again.
Thanks Mark, i will give it a try and see if it works.  Usually we would send down about 50 hooks at a time with squids, bonito, or chicken skin to variate the baits. sometime it works sometimes it doesn't.  One fact about it, it becomes very expensive  when you are not catching any fish.  cheersImage
Hi Bert, in Aust we call those Mahi Mahi or Dolphin fish.try looking up a type of Fish you wish to catch?.
That is correct, Sallad61.

They used to be called dolphin fish because of the sound they make. They sound just like dolphins...true, they make sounds like dolphins. That upset the "do gooders" so the name was changed to the Hawaiian name Mahi Mahi.

I still call them dolphin fish :)

They are very, very good eating. They grow very fast too. They can go from hatching to full adult in just 2 years !

I don't think Bert was saying they are snapper. He was just sharing a photo.
Oh ok:) but if we in Aust & fishing depth`s of 600 -700 ft we would probably get gemfish or something?but we don`t fish, lockdown has vetoed that for a while!:'(
Mate, Sallad, we are all doing it tough...Take it in your stride mate :)

If you knew half of what I have gone through in the last 2 years...you would wonder how I am even still here !!

Bert is probably in lock down too. And if he is not, I can guarantee, he has been !!...:) We are all in it !!

I think it is pretty good that Bert has taken the time and effort to share. Despite all that we are going through, he still wants to ask questions and share his experiences. That is a pretty good bloody thing considering everything we are all going through.
Not sure where you thought I was coming from Boat ?,only never heard of fishing for Snapper at the depths of 600ft ever before. Local knowledge of where you go fishing is is great help. Boat we all have had problems over the last few years my friend, just different problems?.  Pray that when we get to other side of this "Monster"our good problems are back & life get`s normality about it. Am sorry life has been hard for you & do hope it get`s better! Take Care
Hi Bert:  I bet you have never had to go to your doctor's office since they say:  'a snapper a day keeps the doctor away!"  Right?  😊
Hey Bertsfield,

that's a decent haul.
So how did you catch them? Did you try some jigs?
