What do you mean by long line ?

If it is what I think you mean. It is a long line (of course) with lots of baited hooks. Usually 2 or 3 km long with a hook every few meters.

The first thing to do is check your local rules and laws. You might find that long line fishing requires a special licence and they are not cheap.

I don't know what rules you have there about it. But I would say if a commercial fisho sees you using a long line and you don't have a commercial fishing boat number on the side of your boat...you would probably need a big bank account to pay the fine.
Recreational long lines are legal in NZ up to 20 hooks.
Pretty common to use recreational long lines in New Zealand. Especially with Kontiki or Kite fishing off the beaches.
In some areas it is the only way to catch fish if you're fishing from a beach.
Surprised Kontiki fishing hasn't caught on in Australia. Maybe because of the regulations...

I haven't seen many people doing it in boats. But I guess there must be a few around.

Personally I find it the most boring type of fishing.
You got all these hooks out and then you winch in the fish, mostly with an electric winch.

Where is the fun in that?

Also a big chance to get undersized fish. They'll be suffering for a long time and might not survive the release.

And then you got heaps of fish to deal with. All that filleting. And then you have to freeze them or give them away.
I guess it's really good if you got a huge family to feed and you don't really enjoy fishing as a sport.

I feel that it's better to head out and just catch what you want to eat over the next few days.
If you want to eat fish again, just head out again 😊 Luckily we can catch fish all year around in NZ.

I agree...I set the boat up for it when it was built in that it has a mount on the transom rail too take the reel but have never use it. I guess back when my Father-in-Law was fishing he’d set the nine on our way out and pick it up on our way in .....
A quick look...I don't see anything about long lines, but 'drift lines' are not allowed. A long line is a type of drift line. So, probably illegal in Australia.

I agree Mark.

It is not a fun way to fish. Also by catch is an issue which includes turtles, birds, mammals and sharks.

It is not for me, but if it is legal and you want to try it, go for it.
