Flathead

There seems to be a shortage of flatties in the basin? Anyone have any ideas- maybe fished out?

Don't know...It is a big country...What basin ?

St Georges Basin, maybe ?
Yes St George’s Basin.
St Georges Basin is famous for flathead.

Last time I fished there was about 12 years ago. Some one with up to date local knowledge might read this. Otherwise the only suggestion I could make is try different baits at different spots.
Thanks Itsaboat.  Just read that they like the cooler water.  Always thought they liked it warm?  Well winter is on the way so maybe!!!??
Yes, sounds viable. I have only actually targeted flathead an a few occasions over the years. To be honest, I don't know if they are considered winter fish.

Bream are often considered winter fish and I do target them often. Frankly, I have not noticed a significant difference between summer and winter. But some people say bream are winter only...Flathead are often a bi-catch when fishing for bream.

One thing I do know is that a bit of fresh can bring the flathead on. It might not be a lot of rain, but it might be worth a try next week. I leave Nowra to head back out west in a couple of days, so I wont get to test it...But we look forward to seeing your pics. Good luck and let us know how you get on 😊
Hi Guys, I'm new to the forum so forgive any mistakes.  I fish the Basin regularly and the flatties have been very scarce since the water temp went up to 25. Over the years I have caught flatties to 94, jewfish 96, tailor 90. When the Basin is on it is excellent but I have found it difficult for flatties since xmas. I am going out tomorrow and Wed. Will let you know the results.
Hi shawry,

welcome to the forum.
I'm looking forward to read your report from your fishing trip tomorrow.

cheers
Mark
Thanks for the Hello Mark. I only target Flathead with soft plastics but there seems to be alot more Flounder than usual! I caught a small reddy last week, well half of one.Image
wow - what happened to the rest? :-)
Looks like a shark took it, eh?
Hi Shawry,

Welcome to Fishing Reminder.

Thanks for the feed back.

The water temp should start dropping soon. I am at Tapitallee and the mornings are definitely ugg boot :)

A 90 cm tailor !! The best I have ever caught in the Basin was 60 cm.
Here is my fishing mate with that beast. 6Lb line, 10lb leader, 2" gulp prawn.

awesome catch. Loads of fun on light softbait gear. I love those gulp soft baits.
I catch 80% of my fish on gulp lime tigers 😊
Gulps are fantastic but I have gone to ZMen, they last so much longer.
really? I tried them but never got the same kind of action with them.
Madmax recently suggested to use the motor oil variety. I gotta try them next time, see if it will change my mind ;-)

What's your favourite z-man?
I agree that nothing beats the gulps but when you lose four packs in a session it gets expensive. The new ZMen are scented so I will try them tommorrow.
Someone mentioned the other day that they always start fishing with z-man first and only if fishing is very slow going they'll change to gulps. That might be a good option.
I agree, fishing with only gulp gets quite expensive. Especially if you got lots of pickers around, biting the tails off 😊
Hi guys, fishing trip today was so-so. Caught 7 flatties but all undersize.A guy at the ramp had 4 good flathead caught on 5" paddletail. All my fish were caught on 2" gulp prawn in new penny or natural. seems like gulps are the go with Zman as second choice.Have caught a lot of flathead on Zman, here are my favourite colours.

Thanks for the follow up.

So your pic is Z-man ? I have never used Z-man.

Gulp is good. I use Gulp and I find them to be good.

Keep an eye on eBay 😊 I have about 70 or 80 packs of Gulp which I got for about $1 per pack. The last lot I got was 21 packs (assorted) and my winning bid was $27.45 or $27.25...something like that...and that included postage. So taking postage out, less than $1 per pack.

A few years ago, maybe 7 years...or might be 8 years...I put a Gulp out off Culburra Beach just like you would a pilchard. I don't remember what style of Gulp it was, it was pink in colour. But I got a strike. I didn't land the fish but it took a good 20 feet of line before it let go.
