Testing New Website | Category: Fishing Talk

Just published a major website upgrade. It's been overdue.
Google is now enforcing mobile friendliness and many visitors use fishingreminder with their mobile phones and tablets.

I'm hoping that the new layout and functionality will result in a better user experience.
As with any major upgrades I expect a few issues and bugs that I'm resolving as quick as I can over the next few days.

Any feedback, suggestions and error reports are very much appreciated.
Either here in the forum or by contacting me directly. I'm hoping that everything will run smoothly and hopefully error free by the end of this week.

cheers and tight lines
Mark

Hi Mark,

Looks good !

Couple of things I have noticed. I tried to start a new topic a few hours ago. It said the subject line was too short. The heading I used was "New Site". So I made it longer and then it would not allow me to submit at all...So I gave up and went fishing.

The other thing I have noticed, is there is no way to go back to a forum topic. For example, if I read a thread in "Help" I cannot go back to "Help" directly. I need to go back to the forum main page then navigate to "Help".

If I notice anything else I will let you know.

Cheers.

PS. Another example. Once you have read this, you will not be able to go straight back to recent topics, you will have to go right back to the forum main page first.

OK. I just tried again.

It still says that "New Site" is too short for the subject line. I made it longer and it still will not allow the new topic to be submitted.

EDIT: Edit works fine.

I will try a new topic using Google Chrome.

EDIT 2: It is not updating number of posts. My post above says 53 and so does this post. The above should be 54 and this one 55. Also, your avatar is not showing your Admin status and details.

Google Chrome test...Fail.

Cannot post a new topic with Chrome or IE. It does not give any error message as to why.

EDIT: Just noticed. If you go back to the forum main page. It says for this thread 3 replies last post by you. It should say last post by me. So it is not updating post numbers here and poster there.

Hi itsaboat

thanks for the great feedback and testing.
Funny how stuff always works nice on my computer and as soon as I publish it, its broken
I can post topics with chrome, will test that some more.

Just had a another problem, that the page kept reloading when clicking on reply to message. that's fixed now.

I will also add a back to previous page button.
At the moment it's only possible when clicking on the back button in the browser.

You bloody kiwis. You get a brand new toy and you just have to break within 5 minutes ....I would hate to see you with a Meccano set...Go on admit it, that was funny

I have another PC with me running Ubuntu. I think it has Firefox. Not now, I am busy cleaning fish, but later I will arc up the Ubuntu machine and see if that does the same. At least that will rule out any probs with my laptop.

Apart from the subject too short error (which you should be able to adjust in admin settings), I get no other error message. I click on new topic and the entry window opens. Enter stuff and click submit, the please wait box appears. Then the please wait box closes. The entry window remains and nothing else happens.

I will let you know how I go with Ubuntu.

Here is another one for you Mark.

I just clicked on your user name to see if it showed you as Admin...Instead of going to your profile page, it goes to Fishing Times page.

I have tried a few other users. It seems that clicking on any user name takes you to the Fishing Times page.

haha it's fun to break stuff, isn't it?

There are no admin settings anymore - just pure code

This time I'm developing everything completely from scratch.
Thrown away the old forum and no more CMS and all this crap.

When you couldn't post a new topic, did it show the category and location in the post window?
I'm kinda suspecting it's got to do something with session expiring too early.
But if you can reply it shouldn't be that.

I'll track it down and fix this

yeah I haven't implemented the user profiles yet.
I'll do that once everything else runs smoothly.

Yes, I have tried all the topic categories. It opens showing me at Boree Creek but I am now in Warwick QLD. I have been changing it to Warwick, I will try again with it showing Boree Creek.

I just made a couple of test posts. It seems to be working now.

I will still give it a run on Ubuntu thou. I might do that tomorrow.

awesome - I deleted your test posts.

It should be working now on ubuntu as well.
I found a problem with the location and fixed it.
Still need to add the feature to delete posts.

cheers and thanks for testing, really appreciate it.

No worries mate. I have been hanging around for so long now, I am more than happy to help if I can.

Do you mean a delete post option for users?

Delete post should be reserved for Admin (and Mods). I know this is not a very busy forum but we do have a lot of readers. A delete option would be a green light for spammers, scammers and trolls. It is up to you of course.

Edit is good. Can cause similar issues. But at least edit is controllable.

Maybe a Report to Admin button would work. That way a user could request a delete post and at the same time be able to report any scammers, spammers or trolls.

Cheers
Neil

Hi Mark,
It was a pleasant surprise to the c the new look of the website. I hope it will have better performance also.
I use the mobile version also frequently but always feel one problem that days are not displayed with the dates and even in the date picker days are not mentioned. Secondly the list view is also not available, one has to pick each date to view for a week forecast.
Congratulations for the continous improvement policy and good luck.
Best regards

I was thinking a delete button only to allow a user to delete their own message.
In case they post something and decide afterwards they don't like what they posted

Editing own messages is already possible.

Yeah good idea, I might add a report to admin button as well.
As soon as I got email notifications running again and the user profiles and message counts

Maybe a delete option would be OK. After all we don't see any flame wars or any real trolling here. If anyone did try to misuse it, they would stand out like the preverbials. We can go days or even weeks between posts so there is no where for a trouble maker to hide.

Hi Adil

thanks for your feedback.
Do you mean the old website had problems with the datepicker?
I'm hoping the performance will be better now and should work much better on mobiles.
Let me know if you find any issues.

cheers

Dear Mark,
I am talking about mobile version. I use the app on Iphone 5, there is no any update available it means it is the same version without any changes in couple of months I am using. I have to mention that the days names are not displayed along with dates neither on the main screen nor in the date picker. At the other hand this problem does not exist in improved windows version (for PC or Laptop).
I hope you will understand now.
Thanks and regards

Hi Adil

o I see - you mean the app downloaded from itunes.
Yeah that hasn't been updated for a while.
I'm actually planning to develop a new one for iphones, that is similar to the android app.
But the new website should actually work quite nice on your iphone browser.

Cheers
Mark

Really miss being able to filter out all but the highest rated days to fish for my location

hey ljsmith, thanks for your comment.
The sorting and filtering feature will be back very soon.
Just had to focus on a few critical issues first. But it's high on my todo list.

cheers
