Brown trout

csh5121 says:
Hey guys. Recently I have been trying to catch brown trout near State College, Pa with not much luck. I have been out in early and late parts of the day and even at night trying. I have been fishing streams and lakes near Poe Paddy State Forest and bald eagle. I have gone out the last three days and only caught one rainbow. Any suggestions on bait, places to fish, and certain techniques? I have heard that they love minnows and wax worms, which I have been using.

Thanks,

Chris

you can get browns on small spinners (Mepps or Panther Martin) in most streams and ponds. Plain old garden worms (not nightcrawlers) are also a good bait if presented properly.

Look for seams between the main current and eddies, also behind rocks in the stream and undercut banks. proper presentation will have your bait drift past these holding spots within a couple inches of the bottom. I like to put a couple split shot a 2-3 feet up from the hook. You should cast upstream at a 45 degree angle to the current and maintain enough tension on your line so that you feel the shot ticking along the bottom. the trick is getting your drift to pass close enough to spots where fish hold so that they see it and will jump out into the current just long enough to grab it.

God luck!
