Well I have never heard of that reel maker or the brand jarvis walker,so I looked it up and its a large manufacturer in Australia of fishing gear of all sorts from rods & reels to line to knives to boating products. I downloaded one reel page from their site the reels have a very good description and look
like good quality products. It sounds like this mate that left you this tool thought you were fair dinkum !! if you cant get the download page the site is

Quite popular brand here in NZ. Rather on the cheap side though.
I used to have a Jarvis Walker surf casting reel.

But it didn't last very long. Took it out on my kayak one day and after
being submerged in saltwater once, it started deteriorating very quickly.
Didn't buy any other Jarvis Walker products since then ;-)

Not sure about your specific model - it might be better.

My favorite spinning reels at the moment are the cheap Shimano FX 4000.
They sell them at smart marine for around 45$ and they last at least
2-3 seasons on the kayak with constant dunking in saltwater and exposure to the elements. If they start breaking down I just replace them.

Seems more effective then buying a really expensive one, that will break anyway
after a few seasons.

Cheers Mate. I reckon it might last me a while, given that I havn't progressed to kayaking.......yet;) I always give my gear a decent wash down after a day's fishing, it helps prevent salt build up (the "death" of aluminium!)
