Gday. I Smash lots of Crayfish in various parts of New Zealand. I have a very average background in fishing and hope to improve on that by learning from you gents. I am happy to give advice on Crays from how to find, Catch, cook, pot for. when they moult, March, breed, Move in shallow and spawn.
I have seen and caught all 3 of the main spcies found here in NZ.
The most common The NZ Rock Lobster is the most abundant and a major export at over $120,000,000 heading offshore annually. They are strongly built and fight hard. my largest at just over 3kg was more work than a Packhorse Crayfish which weighed in at 7kg.
The Packhorse get big but arent everywhere in NZ like the reds. Rarer still are the slipper lobster as rare as rocking horse shit I leave thrm alone. But despite their rarity I have seen 7 on 1 dive.
Im keen to learn to fish, but just as keen to share experience. Hit me up if youre every venturing my way and want to get amongst the crays.
Cheers Tommo
