Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Hernando
Fishing in Hernando, Florida centers on a diverse mix of lakes, rivers, and easy access to the Gulf shallows, giving anglers a wide range of options within a short drive. The Hernando area is anchored by the Tsala Apopka Chain of Lakes and the Withlacoochee River, plus a maze of canals and backwaters that hold fish 12 months a year. Nearby coastal launches toward Hernando Beach and the Nature Coast flats expand opportunities for redfish, trout, and other inshore gamefish.
Seasonal patterns drive much of the fishing strategy around Hernando. From late winter through spring, largemouth bass push shallow into canals, marsh edges, and protected coves to spawn. This is prime time for sightโfishing with soft plastic stickbaits, floating worms, and lightly weighted creature baits pitched around pads, reeds, and cypress knees. Crappie fishing peaks in the cooler months, with fish staging along channel edges and congregating in open water over submerged brush; slowโtrolled jigs and small live minnows are consistent producers.
Summer fishing shifts toward early and late in the day as water temperatures climb. Bass in Tsala Apopka and the Withlacoochee gravitate to deeper holes, outside grass lines, and shaded cover. Carolinaโrigged plastics, deepโrunning crankbaits, and punching heavy vegetation with compact soft plastics excel once the sun is up. Panfish such as bluegill and shellcracker school on shell bars, weedline points, and along the edges of canals; small worms or crickets under a float are simple and effective. Catfish action stays strong at night on cut bait or chicken liver fished on the bottom in deeper holes and around bends.
Fall often brings one of the most stable bites in Hernando. Cooling water pulls bass to feed aggressively on shad and shiners along mainโlake grass lines, river current breaks, and creek mouths. Burning lipless crankbaits, swimming jigs, and topwater walking baits over submerged vegetation can trigger quality fish. Crappie and bream begin to regroup on deeper structure, making vertical jigging around bridge pilings, brush, and dropโoffs a reliable pattern.
Habitat and locations around Hernando are varied. The Tsala Apopka Chain features shallow marshes, scattered lily pads, cypress trees, and residential canals that all hold fish. Focus on transitionsโwhere open water meets thicker vegetation, or where canals meet main lakes. The Withlacoochee River provides current seams, outside bends, laydowns, and undercut banks that attract bass and catfish. Side channels and backwaters are excellent spots during high water or when boat traffic is heavy.
Techniques and tactics are best kept versatile. Carry a mix of powerโfishing and finesse setups: a mediumโheavy casting rod for spinnerbaits, jigs, and Texas rigs; a medium spinning outfit for small plastics and live bait. In the darker, tanninโstained water common to this region, darker soft plastic colors like junebug, blackโblue, and watermelon red tend to stand out. For crappie, small tube jigs in chartreuse, white, and pink fished slowly at the proper depth can outโfish live bait when the bite is tentative.
For anglers willing to make a short run toward the coast, Hernando is a convenient jumpingโoff point for inshore Gulf fishing. The shallow grass flats, oyster bars, and creek mouths along the nearby Nature Coast hold redfish, spotted seatrout, snook, and seasonal tarpon. Target redfish by casting weedless spoons and soft plastic paddletails along mangrove edges and oyster bars on a moving tide. Trout frequent sandy potholes in the grass; drift these areas while bouncing soft plastics or suspending twitch baits just off the bottom. The combination of rich freshwater systems and accessible inshore saltwater makes Hernando a highly productive base for anglers focused on consistent action throughout the year.

If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 2 beaches and bays in this area.
