Good for one fresh meal! Did catch it by your swim lure
jerk shad?
Is that fish finder of yours a portable type, where one can use it
easily on another boat? Whats the brand and model?

hi roland
I caught this snapper on a red 5 inch gulp jerk shad (think it was tandori chicken).
The fish finder is an eagle cuda 300.
You can get a portable version with battery pack.
But I installed the sounder in the hull and the display holder is screwed onto the yak.
So in my case it's not really portable anymore. I use a motorcycle battery to power it.
It's quite good to see the depth and bottom structure for finding
reefs and holes where fish might be.
cheers

Thanks Mark, did you use a jig head on it (gm?) and your mono
mine line is 15lbs?... Im getting some jerk shad that i'll
try for surf casting. Just starting out with soft lures...
Hope we get some site on it.

Yeah I always use jig heads - normally berkley nitro jig heads 3/8oz.
Sometimes I only use 1/4oz if very shallow or tide isn't moving much.
With jig heads you have to make sure you choose a weight that gets you to
the bottom but is still light enough to allow the lure to move naturally.
I'm only using braided line - mono doesn't work well with soft baits.
It has too much stretch. If your soft baiting you wanna be able to feel your lure bouncing around on the bottom.
I haven't tried soft baiting with surf casting. You would probably use a different method.
Although if you fish around rocks and don't need to cast too far you could use a softbait rod with jig heads.
You just gotta remember that you need to fish quite actively with soft baits.
They need to wiggle and twitch on the bottom and you have to try to imitate the movements of a wounded bait fish.

Hi Mark,
What braid size you use on your soft bait? And do you
use braided all the way or 3 ft mono/flouro connected
at the end of your braided line?

Hi Roland
I'm using yellow 10 pound braided line.
got about 1 meter flouro leader attached to the end and a genie clip tied to the end of the leader.
Then I just hook my jighead ( used a 3/8 ounce - sometimes only 1/4 ounce ) into the genie clip,
attach the softbait and that's pretty much it.
