Decent snapper on Dr Evil

Noice one and I agree the Dr Evil is a productive lure. used to use them a few years back before switching to livies. Water warming up out this way. Kingies are back but not in great numbers yet, but, sadly, so are sharks. Caught an approx 22lb snap on a huge livie last week and mate and I each got a legal kingi over the weekend. That was his first and he's stoked. Bronzie just tagged it on the way up but no major damage. We were about 8kms apart and after a few hours we both got hit around the same time. A nice bit of intel for around this area - that it is holding kingies in two spots and they are sparking up at the same time.

Yeah, the high number of sharks has put me off live baiting. Have you caught many kingies on the Dr Evil? What I don't like about them is that there's no wire connection between hooks and line attachment. A really big fish and solid drag would probably break the lure. Just bought a similar lure - Nomad Design DTX . That's also got a huge bib for slower trolling speeds and looks very solid with internal wire. Can't wait to give that a try in the next couple of days.

Only snapper on the Dr.E. Many of the crankbaits in USA they use on bass and the like work well at kayak speeds too. But like you say, we need lures that can handle some jandle. As I'm only in it for the tow, and there's onyl ever been one snapper that has ever really towed the kayak around, it's really only kingfish, sharks and marlin I'm keen on. If there was a better way to target kingies than livebaiting, I'd surely be using it. that said, there are some things we can do to help reduce the chances of them being taxed once hooked. I'll actually be looking for sharks in a month or so, once the make-over on my latest Alvey is complete. It and I need a few test sharks before, if ever, the marlin missions start. Yes, I'm hoping to use an Alvey for those missions :-) May as well be hung for a sheep than a lamb.

Haha, you really love those Alveys, eh? Good that they provide so much fun for ya :) Yeah, I've been looking for ages to find alternatives to live baiting for kingfish. I definitely prefer using lures and I'm sure there's that magic lure out there that will work great on a kayak. I'm determined to find it, haha Had a bit of luck trolling stick baits. Might try a stick bait and a diving lure simultaneously next time to cover more water.

I've got a bunch of slug-go (big softbaits) that work on kingies, but only when you sight them and they are in the mood. Probably a month or more away from the start of that sort of competitive feeding when they just love to smash anything that looks like baitfish. But the water seems crazy-warm so maybe it'll be sooner this year.

You are welcome to a few slug-gos if you can't find them. I doubt I'll use them anytime soon. And yes, Alveys are so much fun to use I even said to someone today that I doubt I'll ever go back to spin reels. That kingi in the weekend, while not a big one, was so much fun. I really didn't realise how much fun I was missing out on until itsaboat's nudge was the final one of many that convinced me to give them a try. It hasn't happened yet but I suspect a shark will be a blast on an Alvey too.

Cheers mate, I just bought a few slug-gos recently. Haven't tried them yet. Also got a few of those large Z-man heroZ. Lot's a new toys to play around with :)
