Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 8:40 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

Next Full Moon in ~16 days on 30th June
New Moon is generally a very productive time for fishing. Dark nights mean that many predators feed more actively during daylight hours. The combined gravity of sun and moon during New Moon days has a stronger effect on all water bodies, leads to increased food availabilty and hence better fishing.
  • Distance to earth:
    363,745 km
    Proximity:
    98.5 %
We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

Tide Coefficient at 12:41 pm is 92

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Invercargill

Invercargill and the greater Southland coast form a practical base for anglers chasing a broad mix of species across rivers, estuaries and inshore grounds. Freshwater action centers on the Oreti River, small tributaries and farm drains where brown and rainbow trout and the occasional Chinook move through seasonal patterns; spring and early summer bring increased surface activity and dry-fly opportunities, while cooler months often concentrate fish in deeper runs and tailouts. Estuary systems like the New River Estuary and tidal flats east of Bluff hold flounder, mullet and school shark and are ideal for light tackle baiting or soft-plastic work at ebb and flood tides. Offshore, Foveaux Strait and the sheltered bays around Bluff and Sandy Point are the go-to areas for inshore reef species—blue cod and gurnard dominate the rocky breaks and ledges, while tarakihi and red cod take baits or slow jigging presentations over gravel and sand.

Habitat matters: target tailouts, runs and riffles in rivers for trout with upstream approaches and long, controlled drifts; concentrate on channels and tidal gutters in estuaries where fish sit to ambush food carried by the tide. On rocky shorelines and reef patches, look for kelp edges, pinnacles and transition zones where hard and soft bottom meet—these hold blue cod, gurnard and hapuku. Sandy banks and drop-offs near reefs are prime for tarakihi and red cod. In the surf and along wide beaches, kahawai and school shark patrol the breaking waves and gutters; cast metal lures or bait strips to provoke fast strikes.

Common techniques: fly anglers do best on rivers and upper estuary flats with dry flies, nymphs and small streamers fished on a long leader and subtle presentation. Spin anglers will have success on trout and kahawai using small hardbaits, spinners and soft plastics, varying retrieve speed to match water temperature and fish mood. Estuary and surf baiting with pilchard, squid strips or mussel is dependable for flounder, mullet and sharks—present on light running rigs or with a small sinker to keep baits near the bottom. For reef species, drift or anchor over structure and use natural baits (paua, mussel, pilchard) or slow-pitch jigs; a beefy 6–10kg outfit is typical for blue cod and tarakihi while larger groper requires heavier tackle and sturdier hooks.

Tactical tips:

  • Fish incoming and outgoing tides in estuaries and nearshore gutters—bites often spike around tide changes.
  • Work the first and last two hours of daylight for trout and kahawai; early morning surface takes can be very productive in spring and summer.
  • Use light leaders and stealth for pressured river fish; swing streamers through runs and hold drifted nymphs tight to the bottom.
  • On reefs, probe contours slowly—tarakihi respond to subtle jigging and slow lifts, blue cod key on structure and will bite close to kelp beds.
  • Keep multiple presentations ready: a lure for active fish and a bait rig for quieter periods will cover more water and conditions.

The Best Fishing Spots around Invercargill

Oreti Beach

Long, drive-on surf beach popular for casting to kahawai, spring–summer rig (spotted smoothhound) and elephant fish, with winter red cod and year-round chance of sea-run brown trout near the mouth; clean gutters form along the bar, and west or easing winds often bring the bite on compared with more exposed Colac Bay.

New River Estuary

The tidal estuary on Invercargill’s doorstep produces flounder, roaming kahawai, and sea-run brown trout, with small boats and kayaks working channels on the flood and shore anglers targeting current seams along the banks; it’s a sheltered alternative when the surf at Oreti Beach is unfishable.

Bluff Harbour

A deep, working harbour where boaties tap into close-in reefs for blue cod, tarakihi, and moki, while land-based spots and wharves yield kahawai, wrasse, and night-time squid; it’s a go-to when coastal swell rules out open-water points like Stirling Point.

Awarua Bay

Shallow, sheltered waters and channels hold flounder, kahawai, and sea-run trout, with small boats and kayaks drifting flats on the turn of tide and bank anglers prospecting drains; it offers calmer options compared with the exposed coast around Bluff Harbour.

Howells Point

This rocky headland at Riverton is a famed land-based ledge and boat launch area for blue cod (by boat just outside), moki, kahawai, and reef wrasse; swells wrap differently than at nearby Taramea Bay, creating fishable windows for rock-hoppers.

Colac Bay

A classic Southland surf beach producing spring–summer runs of rig and elephant fish, with kahawai schools often within casting range and winter red cod; anglers target gutters along the main beach, using it as a counterpart to calmer estuary options like New River Estuary.

Oreti River

A major Southland trout fishery close to town, offering sight-fishing and nymphing for large brown trout in clear reaches, with sea-run fish near the lower river in spring; many locals split time here and at coastal spots such as Oreti Beach depending on flows and wind.

Waihopai River

The urban river winding through Invercargill fishes well for brown trout, including sea-run fish in the lower tidal stretches in spring–early summer; accessible banks and bridges make it a convenient option when time is short or when wind hampers nearby Oreti River reaches.

Waituna Lagoon

A shallow coastal lagoon on the Awarua Plain known for cruising brown trout and occasional perch, with brackish influences at times; polaroiding from shore or stalking by kayak is popular, and many anglers pair it with a tide mission to Awarua Bay the same day.

Stirling Point

The rocky tip at the entrance to Bluff Harbour offers land-based access to current lines that bring kahawai, moki, wrasse, and seasonal squid; it’s a photogenic, high-energy spot where timing the tide and swell can produce fast action when conditions align.
