Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Invercargill
Invercargill and the greater Southland coast form a practical base for anglers chasing a broad mix of species across rivers, estuaries and inshore grounds. Freshwater action centers on the Oreti River, small tributaries and farm drains where brown and rainbow trout and the occasional Chinook move through seasonal patterns; spring and early summer bring increased surface activity and dry-fly opportunities, while cooler months often concentrate fish in deeper runs and tailouts. Estuary systems like the New River Estuary and tidal flats east of Bluff hold flounder, mullet and school shark and are ideal for light tackle baiting or soft-plastic work at ebb and flood tides. Offshore, Foveaux Strait and the sheltered bays around Bluff and Sandy Point are the go-to areas for inshore reef species—blue cod and gurnard dominate the rocky breaks and ledges, while tarakihi and red cod take baits or slow jigging presentations over gravel and sand.
Habitat matters: target tailouts, runs and riffles in rivers for trout with upstream approaches and long, controlled drifts; concentrate on channels and tidal gutters in estuaries where fish sit to ambush food carried by the tide. On rocky shorelines and reef patches, look for kelp edges, pinnacles and transition zones where hard and soft bottom meet—these hold blue cod, gurnard and hapuku. Sandy banks and drop-offs near reefs are prime for tarakihi and red cod. In the surf and along wide beaches, kahawai and school shark patrol the breaking waves and gutters; cast metal lures or bait strips to provoke fast strikes.
Common techniques: fly anglers do best on rivers and upper estuary flats with dry flies, nymphs and small streamers fished on a long leader and subtle presentation. Spin anglers will have success on trout and kahawai using small hardbaits, spinners and soft plastics, varying retrieve speed to match water temperature and fish mood. Estuary and surf baiting with pilchard, squid strips or mussel is dependable for flounder, mullet and sharks—present on light running rigs or with a small sinker to keep baits near the bottom. For reef species, drift or anchor over structure and use natural baits (paua, mussel, pilchard) or slow-pitch jigs; a beefy 6–10kg outfit is typical for blue cod and tarakihi while larger groper requires heavier tackle and sturdier hooks.
Tactical tips:
- Fish incoming and outgoing tides in estuaries and nearshore gutters—bites often spike around tide changes.
- Work the first and last two hours of daylight for trout and kahawai; early morning surface takes can be very productive in spring and summer.
- Use light leaders and stealth for pressured river fish; swing streamers through runs and hold drifted nymphs tight to the bottom.
- On reefs, probe contours slowly—tarakihi respond to subtle jigging and slow lifts, blue cod key on structure and will bite close to kelp beds.
- Keep multiple presentations ready: a lure for active fish and a bait rig for quieter periods will cover more water and conditions.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 4 beaches and bays in this area.
