It is a bream. They can live happy in brackish water. They probably got in there from the canal during a flood. At a guess if it is about 1kg it would be around 15 years old or maybe older. So a flood any time the past 15 to 20 years could have got them in.

I have caught bream in water fresh enough to drink. Flathead also can live in brackish to almost fresh water. If I was in your area I would be trying some soft plastics and definitely trying some "salt water" baits. Looking on the map, I would say not many people fish that lake which makes it even better !!

Nice. I tried today there with some live yabbies, got a bit spooked by all the water fowl about so kind of chickened out (pun not intended) lol!
