Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

October Fishing Report
October brings warming currents and bait schools to Newcastle. Expect salmon and tailor along Stockton Beach gutters at dawn, with metal slugs doing damage on birds and bust-ups. Inside the Harbour and along the breakwalls, bream and flathead are active on the run-out tide; soft plastics and vibes worked near rock edges and drop-offs are producing. Night-time has seen a few mulloway on live mullet and fresh squid strips.
Offshore reefs are turning on early-season snapper at first light, especially after a southerly change settles. Squid are thick around kelp and ribbon-weed patches on clear evenings; size 2.5–3.0 jigs in natural colours are best. Watch for sporadic kingfish shadowing bait along Nobbys and the headlands on tide changes—stickbaits and micro-jigs are worth a shot.
Conditions: light morning winds, small to moderate swell, and improving water clarity. Best bite windows are dawn/dusk and around tide changes, particularly two days either side of the new moon.
Top tip: After a southerly, fish the cleaner green water line—work lures along the colour change where predators pin bait; if you see pilchards flicking, upsize leaders and keep casts long to avoid spooking fish.

Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes.
